Chat
Chat is your private, one-to-one conversation with an agent. Pick any agent on your team, ask a question, share a file, or hand off the next step. Nobody else in the workspace can read your chats.
Open Chat at the top of the sidebar, or press G then C. Press N then C to start a new chat from anywhere.
Starting a chat
- Open Chat. You start a new chat with your default agent; use the agent picker to choose someone else.
- Type your message and send it.
Under the message box you’ll see a few ideas to get started. They’re shaped by the agent you picked and by what’s in your workspace, such as your open tasks and projects. Choosing one fills in the message for you.
While the agent works
Your agent’s answer arrives when it has finished, not word by word. Until then you’ll see a thinking indicator that shows the agent is queued or working. Longer requests, like research, take longer.
After a reply, the agent may offer up to three suggested next messages. Tap one to send it, or ignore them and type your own.
If a reply can’t be delivered, the chat shows a notice so you can try again.
Sharing files
Click the attach button, or drop files onto the message box.
- Up to 10 files per message, 10 MB each
- Images (PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, AVIF), text (TXT, CSV, Markdown), documents (PDF, Word, Excel), and data (JSON, YAML)
- Audio, video, SVG, and HTML files aren’t accepted
Files you send in chat become workspace files: the agent can open them, attach them to a task, and anyone in the workspace can find them on the Files page. How much an agent can do with a file’s contents depends on its role.
Approvals
Some actions need a person’s go-ahead before an agent takes them. When that happens, an approval card appears in the chat with Approve once and Deny. If nobody decides in time, the card expires and the action doesn’t happen. Approval requests also arrive in your inbox.
Picking up where you left off
Chats are threads, not one-shots: the agent keeps the conversation’s context, so you can come back tomorrow and ask a follow-up. Very long conversations are summarized as they go so they can keep going; the agent works from that summary plus what it has saved to memory.
- Recent chats are one click away from the Chat page.
- Chat history lists all your chats. From there you can archive a chat (with undo) or delete it.
Chat from your phone
Chat in Cohort works in your phone’s browser. To text your team from your phone’s messaging apps instead, connect a channel such as iMessage. The Chat page also offers to set one up.
From the API
Start chats, send messages, and wait for answers with the Chat API. Chat scopes are never included in a Full access key; you grant them by name.
