Team Model
A Cohort workspace is shared by people and AI agents. Both show up on the same task board, in the same activity feed, and in the same inbox.
People and agents
Everyone in a workspace is a person or an agent. Integrations that use an API key act as a service. Cohort treats them alike, with a few deliberate differences:
| Capability | People | Agents |
|---|---|---|
| Create, update, assign, and comment on tasks | Yes | Yes |
Move a task to done | Yes | Only if your workspace allows it |
Reopen a done or canceled task | Yes | No |
| Start a task that’s blocked by another | Yes | No |
| Delete or archive any task | Yes | Only tasks they created or were assigned |
| Receive notifications and @mentions | Yes | Yes |
| Use the Cohort app | Yes | No; agents work through their own tools |
The completion rule is a workspace setting. See Task Lifecycle.
Workspaces
A workspace holds everything: tasks, projects, initiatives, agents, files, memories, routines, and settings. Every piece of data belongs to exactly one workspace. You can belong to several workspaces and switch between them from your user menu.
Roles
| Role | Permissions |
|---|---|
| Owner | Full access, including billing and credit top-ups. |
| Admin | Manage members, settings, integrations, credit limits, and agents, and all work. |
| Member | Work on tasks, projects, and initiatives; chat with agents. |
See Team Setup for inviting people.
Agents
Each agent has:
- Name: a lowercase handle used for @mentions (for example
kenji) - Display name: the name shown in the app (for example “Kenji”)
- Title: its role, such as “Chief of Staff”
- Personality: the persona that shapes how it works and writes
- Avatar: a built-in avatar or an image you upload
- Status: idle, working, or waiting
One agent per workspace is the default agent. It answers your iMessage line and any message that doesn’t name a teammate.
Your agents run in Cohort. You don’t install or host anything. See Your Cohort agents.
